COVID-19 vaccination for children

The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATARGI) has approved the use of a new formulation of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine (Comirnaty) for children aged 5 to 11 in Australia.

What is the vaccine dose for children aged 5-11?

The recommended dose is a third of the recommended dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for those aged over 12 years.

Who can have the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for children?

All children aged 5 to 11 are eligible to receive the vaccine. As with all vaccinations, the COVID-19 vaccines carry a small element of risk, and parents and caregivers are advised to speak with their GP prior to vaccination consent, should they have any concerns.

How many vaccine doses are required?

The recommended schedule is two doses, 8 weeks apart. Children who turn 12 after their first dose, may receive the adolescent/adult formulation for their second dose.

Who can give consent for the children's vaccine?

For the COVID-19 vaccination for children aged 5 to 11, consent is required from a parent or guardian at both the time of booking, and the appointment.
