Everything you need to know about Dental Veneers
If you’re unhappy with your smile, or you’re self-conscious about showing your teeth, cosmetic dental veneers may be something to consider. Veneers look just like natural teeth, only better, therefore improving the appearance of your smile. There are many different options for veneers to suit different needs and budgets. The dentist will explain the different options during an initial consult.
Why would I choose to have Dental Veneers fitted?
Dental veneers are designed to cover up things like chips to the tooth, discolouration, misaligned or crooked teeth, wide gaps in between teeth and breakages, therefore improving the visual appearance of your smile. Dental veneers are an option for patients who have a strong and healthy tooth structure but are unhappy about gaps in between teeth, discolouration or crooked or misshapen teeth.
What are Dental Veneers?
Dental veneers are custom-fitted, tooth-coloured shells or coverings that are placed over the front of each tooth. You don’t need to cover every tooth with a veneer, just the ones that are problematic and potentially the neighbouring teeth. Veneers are typically made of porcelain or various types of composite resin materials. You may need one or several veneers to achieve your desired look.
How long do Dental Veneers last?
The lifespan of Dental Veneers will depend on the material (porcelain or composite resin), and how well you care for them. Porcelain veneers, that are well maintained, can last for 10-15 years, whereas composite veneers can last up to 5-7 years. Visiting your dentist at least twice a year is important for a check-up & clean and to monitor any damage or identify the need for timely repair or replacement.
What is the difference between Dental Veneers, Crowns or Implants?
Dental Veneers are used to restore the cosmetic appearance of a tooth, unlike other treatments like dental implants, which are used to replace the structure of a tooth. Dental implants consist of small titanium screws that are surgically inserted into the jaw to act as artificial roots. The metallic posts then provide an anchor to hold the replacement tooth in place.
A typical dental implant procedure typically takes place over a two-stage surgical process compared to the veneering process.
While dental veneers are superficial enhancers bonded to the front of the tool, a dental crown encloses the entire tooth to protect teeth that are badly broken or cracked. A dental crown can also be used to prolong a tooth from further damage following root canal treatment.
