Why we care about Movember
What is Movember?
During the month of November, we see more men sporting luscious moustaches than any other month of the year. The Movember challenge sees “Mo Bros” from around the world grow moustaches with the objective to spark conversation around prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men’s suicide.
Why we care about men's health
The stats around men’s health speak for themselves:
- Men are dying on average 5 years earlier than women.
- Tesitcular cancer is the most common cancer in men.
- One in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer by the age of 85 and it is more common in older men, over 65 years old.
- Men account for 75% of all suicides.
At Our Medical, we provide exceptional healthcare for all. We understand that men may be less likely to seek medical assistance for mental health concerns, checkups and screenings.
What can men do for their own health?
Grow a mo
Grow a mo for the month of November and start the conversation with friends, family, and colleagues about men’s health.
Stay active
Physical activity reduces the risk for several diseases and has many long-term benefits. Aim for 30 minutes of exercise or physical activity per day that makes you feel good.
Regular Check-ups
Prostate Cancer
Understanding your risk of prostate cancer is the first step. Currently there is no national screening program available for prostate cancer.
At Our Medical, our doctors are on hand to discuss family history, important information and whether a PSA (prostate-specific antigen) test is right for you. If you are aged 50 and over or have a family history of prostate cancer, come in to Our Medical to speak with a GP today.
Testicular Cancer
Causes of testicular cancer are unknown. There are certain factors that may increase your risk including family history and personal circumstances.
Be aware of what to look out for and come in to see a doctor at Our Medical who will assess any symptoms that are of concern.
Be aware of mental health
The COVID-19 pandemic has been challenging for all Australians. Seeing friends and family less than usual can lead to weakened relationships and poor social connections. It is important to remember to check in with your loved ones often. A conversation can go a long way.
If you are feeling overwhelmed or need support, Our Medical reminds patients to speak to their GP face to face.
